A truck that at this point looks much nicer than mine.
What is one* thing you don’t know (and probably have no way of finding out) about your vehicle that you’d most like to know? Treatment in a past ownership? Features that don’t make sense? How many murder victims were transported in the trunk?
For me, it’s the behaviour of the previous owner. I know they towed it behind an RV. I’d like to know how far, how often, and whether they knew the first thing about flat towing a 4wd vehicle. Sometimes I just feel like it has too many noises for a vehicle that’s only done an alleged 160,000km... on the other hand, it’s a decade-old 1st-gen Colorado that I’ve owned longer than they did. But I’d still like to know.
*O r two. Or none. Or all of them. Whatever.

Treatment in a past ownership
Carfax/Autocheck gives you an idea somewhat- rental or personal, where it was driven most, regular maintenance schedule followed or not etc.

I wish I knew literally anything about the first owner and their treatment. What kind of person is the original owner and gets their car repo'd after 100,000 miles and 6 years? The only thing that showed its age was the mangled key fob. The only options are an expensive color and the automatic. Also, what happened to the front driver's side inner wheel arch? It's missing now. So many questions and no answers.

I’m only interested in previous info about the 1502. I’d love to know each person that owned it and how they enjoyed the car. That car is 45 years old and has been all over europe, “ restored/built” at least twice, and heavily modified. The previous owner did the current build, so I’d also like to know what sort of car the carbs came off of, where he got the M10 etc...

My Tacoma was a one owner with all records for 125k miles. That being an engineering company fleet vehicle. I’m suspicious it may have had a front end impact with an animal or something. The headlights are new looking, still after my 3 years on, and at speed, after an alignment, I’m not sure it tracks exactly straight.
I just hit 150k miles so I think I’ll have a real good look during the big inspection that’s now due. Plus, the suspension needs a shock/ spring/bus hing refresh.

Because Ford is good at marketing and understands that it doesn’t matter if the competition has the same feature first, or even simultaneously , what matters is that people can see them.
EG you remember a few years back when Ford was making a big deal over their built-in blind spot mirrors? They were quite obvious and in your face, and so was their marketing. ...GM (and likely everyone else) also had them. I never noticed them until I had a seat in one at a dealer, because they were molded right into the mirror and were practically invisible unless you were using them. And GM never marketed them.
Etc.

I want to know if their parents know they or their friends were smoking in the car while probably high school students. It’s completely inconsequential since the only evidence is a tiny little burn in the back seat. No smoke smells. But it feels like some scandalous gossip now that I’ve married into the family that originally owned the car. (Previous o wners are now my 2nd or 3rd cousins? I think I’ve met the dad but not the kids would’ve driven the car. )

My truck had 26 miles on it when I bought it, so there’s no real mystery in its history. Although I would like to know what kind of drugs the person who ordered it was on. I mean, who orders not one, but TWO 2wd crew cab Sierras, with the 4.8 liter V8, in Illinois. It’s basically an unsellable combination. That’s ok for a weirdo like me, because I’m the only guy who actually wanted a full-size 2wd truck around here. I wasn’t planning on buying a crew cab, but for the deal I scored I took it. It certainly worked out in my favor. My brand new crew cab truck was under $22k out the door, and I’m still DDing it 14 years later.

I bought the WRX new and have driven all but maybe 200 of the 71,500km that are on it so no questions there. The 128i on the other hand may have been swapped to a manual so I’d like clarity on that. Vin decoders say it’s an auto, the pedal count and gear lever say otherwise. :/
Also, having driven a couple of Colorados of that vintage, including one with well under 100k km, I’m reasonable sure they all produce more noises that one thinks they should.

I have an orange Audi A4. I bought it CPO with 6k miles on it.
As far as I can tell, it was a demo car. It wasn’t titled into private ownership. Which means the dealer bought it and sat on it and kept it around as a sales tool. That’s all fine.
Why did they get an orange one? I LOVE the color and am glad they bought it. But every other A4 I’ve seen has been black, silver, white, or grey. I’d like to high five the person that convinced the sales manager to go wild and get a weird color.

This is a fact. It made several of them at 4years/65,000km when I got it. Still enjoying it, but man the noises it chucks out sometimes. If I’m in an aggressive mood, it’s no big deal. If I’m in a relaxy, mood, it can interfere somewhat

If I had one guess, it was to draw attention to it and interest people in testing it, who then go inside and order a new one because the can’t stand the colour.
Those people are incorrect. We need more orange cars.

The 5.3s sell way quicker. More power and in reality they get the same fuel economy. Around here everybody gets 4wd, even most fleets. I think it’s silly. We’re in the flat lands. With good tires (I run snows now, but I ran all seasons for many years), you basically never NEED 4wd. I’ve been doing Chicago winters in 2wd trucks for 20 years now.

Size maybe ? The LS is physically small, and even that is tight. This, for example, is the best way to access the #7 spark plug. #1? Threading through brake lines. Getting the fender liner out, removing the wires, replacing #3, 5 and 7 took me about half an hour. #1 took me another 45 minutes.
Now as far as why they haven’t stuck the 5.3 in the NEW Colorado... come on. There’s enough space there.
And I don’t know that I’d go as far as “gem”, but it’s certainly a highly enjoyable piece of fool’s gold. :)

I’d like to know how many Copper Red Mica Mazda5s with 6-speed manual transmissions were sold in the US. My guess is approximately 186 (14,000 Mazda5s sold that year, 4% manual take rate (only available on Sport trim level) , 3 colors available with the manual). This makes lots of assumptions as I don’t know how many of each trim level were sold, the breakdown by color, etc. My contact at the dealer, a Mazda enthusiast that happens to drive a RHD 3-rotor Cosmo, was unable to get this figure for me.
As the dealer’s loss-leader, I’d like to know how the vehicle was treated in its first 126 miles. Did the people that put the mileage on know how to properly drive a manual? Did they rev the piss out of it? I was very careful with it when I test drove it and didn’t take it over 3,500 RPM for the first 1,000 miles, doing my part to make it last, but others may not have been so nice.
Why is my insurance over $1,300/year? I'm old as dirt, drive a minivan, have a clean record and decent credit. My coverage isn't that high, but I do live in the city and park on the street. A younger, married co-worker with a horrible record and a sporty Mitsubishi was paying considerably less per year.

Terrain - Owned since new, no history mystery there, but I’d like to know why GM thought it was a good idea to put a cross brace inline with the oil pan drain so that oil sprays all over it?
Cruze - Also owned since new. But, I’d like to know the address of the GM engineer came up with the stupid PCV system so I can send them a sternly worded letter (and possibly a box of dog poo).
Volvo 240 - How high was the PO when they tried to perform the rear bumper delete?

Is your emissions test a tailpipe sniff?
I believe they are related to “reduced catalyst performance”, so it may be that the catalytic converter functions well enough to pass emissions, but is not up to Volvo’s desired performance level. But , if it passes and doesn’t run like shit, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Though I would still service that PCV. When I got the 850 it ran like total dog shit, so I did a basic tune up - air filter, oil change, plugs, trans service, and it was so much better, I was ecstatic! Then I reluctantly did the PCV system and HOLY SHIT IT RUNS LIKE A NEW CAR! It was an amazing difference.

Had something like this:
Bought an old Saturn off an ex-RCMP officer. Said the car was his but son was driving it but son needed a bigger car as he was now an adult (talked to him, he just hated it, which I understood).
Ex-cop selling the car told me many times it had never been smoked in, and I didn’t take him as a liar because he disclosed stuff I wouldn’t have noticed . Nice to know but funny because I fully don’t care, it’s a <1500$ Saturn that I would soon use for a smoking lounge when parked and not in use, but I was glad it was clean!
Got it home and noticed the grey headliner was stained from cig smoke above the driver window. Somebody was lying to their dad!

Who is it that did a horrible job repairing my car sometime between 1970something and 1990something? I keep uncovering their weird and bizarre mistakes and it’s baffling me. I want to find this person if they’re still alive and tell them what a ridiculous job they’ve done. I’ve mentioned before that whoever repainted it broke the windshield wipers by reinstalling them with a hammer and also inexplicably painted my exhaust tips orange... Then there’s whoever installed both my high beams on the right and both my low beams on the left... Then there’s the peculiar opposite of a dent going on with my wavy panel under the bumper... And the engine that appears to have been rebuilt poorly in the past resulting in me having to rebuild the engine AGAIN years later to fix all their mistakes (well, and also various things that needed replacing anyway, but mistake-fixing was what got me in there )... My car is weird. I would also like to know more about the previous owners, though. It’s a 54 year-old car (and one that was pretty desirable at the time) that’s seen a lot of use, so I imagine there must be some interesting stories about it. Its history is very mysterious to me. If classic cars could talk...

Why, after almost 22 years roaming the Earth ( mostly behind an RV I believe) does everything that I pull off of it or dig into appear to have come from another Jeep? The whole front clip is a slightly different shade of black than the tub. When I pulled the head to replace it I noticed pull-a-part paint pen on the block indicating that it came out of a ‘99. Also, why in the hell did you cut into the wiring harness so much?? Don’t you know that there are plenty of safer places to get power??
Anyway, it’s a forever vehicle (Lord willing) to me so I doubt anyone will be trying to solve these mysteries but I have piled on plenty of my own handiwork and great ideas that have further Ship of Theseus-ed it and intend to do many more. Have fun future estate sale purchaser!

Fintail - what happened between ~1976-89? I have tons of records from new and after 1989, but nothing in the middle. Was it not driven, or did it go around the clock? It migrated north during that time, but otherwise, I have very little to go on.
